The marketing & design individuals

Image from Not On The Street High .Com

Having worked with a marketing team for the past 3 months, there are many many new perspectives that I am beginning to see. One of the big ones that I have learned is that the marketing people are keen on the message itself. The message of whatever that is conveyed needs to be easily understood. On the contrary, for the designers, we are keen on the design. The aesthetics of whatever we are doing needs to look intriguing.

I have always had a lot of trouble be looking from the marketing perspective. For myself, I cannot stand looking at something horrendous. So, a few weeks ago, when my parents came over for a visit and I showed them the various designs I did for the breast cancer campaign, wanting to prove that I was right. Aesthetics is what draws people. I asked them which one they preferred.

Version D (1.5)

To my surprise, I received 2 different answers. My mom loved Version A because the image was intriguing. My dad however preferred the one that was chosen by my manager in the end (version D), because he said the message was straight forward. He didn’t really know what the first design was about if he just glanced it.

So that made me started thinking. Perhaps there are 2 kinds of people that we need to reach. The first kind is like my mom, who prefers the design. The nicer the design is, the more likely she will be willing to spend more time. The second kind is like my dad, who cares a lot more about the message. He wants to know what he is looking at. If he can’t figure it out within a few seconds, he will bypass it.

it will take a lot of training and years of experience to come up with designs that are both artistic and communicative. But even when you achieve that, there will still be people who dislike it or prefer the other design... =_=
